Antibiotic Powder & Solutions

Antibiotics are commercially available in the powder form as well as ready solutions for laboratory use in clinical microbiology labs, research labs, QC and pathology labs. These are commonly used in the lab for antibiotic susceptibility testing & MIC determination performed by CLSI method. An antibiotic stock is prepared by dissolving a specific quantity of antibiotic powder in a solvent. Serial dilutions of the antibiotic stock are prepared and organisms under study exposed to the dilutions. The lowest dilution which does not show microbial growth corresponds to the MIC of the antibiotic for the organism under study. Antibiotic solutions are also used in molecular biology research wherein antibiotic resistance is used as a marker for clone selection.
