Condensers

Condensers, as the name suggests,are used in laboratories to condense a liquid from its gaseous state. It is generally used in organic chemistry to recover organic liquids which were lost due to heating. Condensers may promote condensation by lowering the pressure. The simplest condensers, used in laboratories consist of a single glass tube, which uses the cool external air to condense the gas. In a slightly more complicated model, cold water is circulated in a tube outside the tube contained the gas, which quickens the condensation process. The rate of condensation within a condenser depends upon multiple factors. The heat capacities of the condensing fluid play a major role. Different types of cooling fluid can be used, like, water, air, organic or aqueous solvent. The temperature of the cooling fluid is also important. Another important parameter is the size of the cooling surface. Heat exchange is promoted by providing a larger surface area of contact between the surface between the cooling gas and the gas to be condensed. To increase the surface area, coiled condensers are used and in some cases beads, helices and rings are used.
