TLC Plates

Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) is a separation technique employed for the separation of non-volatile mixtures. The stationary phase in TLC is usually an adsorbent material like silica, aluminium oxide or cellulose, which is coated onto a glass, plastic or aluminium foil. The mixture which needs to be separated is the mobile phase and moves up the stationary phase through capillary action. Like the general chromatography principle, the different components of the mixture move up the TLC plate at different rates and thus, the components are separated. TLC plates are now commercially available. Various particle size ranges are prepared to suit different experimental needs. The thickness of the sheet varies from 0.25 to 2 mm in analytical to preparative TLC respectively. TLC plates are used for the characterization and isolation of compounds in a mixture.
