Naphthalene dicarboxylic anhydride is the precursor to perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride, which is a precursor to several commercial pigments and dyes. It is also employed in research. Acenaphthylene has been used to investigate the photo-dimerization of acenaphthylene in micellar and hydrogel media.
