Andrade Peptone Water is supplied by HiMedia. It is a sterile ready prepared media containing 5ml of light pink coloured clear solution in bottles. Andrade Peptone Water is s a basal medium to which various carbohydrates can be added to study fermentation reactions, particularly of members of the Enterobacteriaceae. It is advisable to store this ready prepared media between 2-8C. Composition (in gm/L) is as follows:

Peptic digest of animal tissue (10.00)

Sodium chloride (5.00)

Andrade indicator (0.10)

Andrade Peptone Water is the most commonly used media for carbohydrate fermentation. Peptic digest used in the medium is free from fermentable carbohydrates. The medium is also free from nitrates which may interfere with gas production. Andrade indicator is a solution of acid fuchsin which when titrated with sodium hydroxide which changes colour from pink to yellow. It changes colour from yellow to pink as the pH decreases. The medium is pink when hot but becomes straw coloured on cooling. Test carbohydrate solutions should be sterilized separately and aseptically added to sterile Andrade Peptone Water. The biochemical identification of organisms capable of growing in this medium is made by various sugar fermentation results.
