Bile Broth is supplied by HiMedia. It is a sterile ready prepared media containing 5ml of light yellow coloured clear solution in bottles. Bile Broth is generally used for the cultivation of Enterobacteriaceae. It is advisable to store this ready prepared media between 2-8C. Composition (in gm/L) is as follows:

Peptic digest of animal tissue (20.00)

Sodium taurocholate (5.00)

Sodium chloride (5.00)

When blood samples from a patient with suspected enteric fever is submitted for the Widal test, it is useful as a routine to culture the clot after separation of serum. Sodium taurocholate inhibits majority of Gram-positive species. Sodium chloride preserves the isotonicity of the medium. Peptic digest of animal tissue serves important sources of nitrogen whereas addition of streptokinase solution causes rapid clot lysis with release of bacteria trapped in the clot.
