Boric acid by MP Biomedicals is a high grade reagent. Also known as hydrogen borate, this compound is a weak, monobasic lewis acid of boron. This reagent is available as a white powder which is soluble in water and freely soluble in boiling water, however insoluble in alcohol. It is called sassolite, when found as a mineral in some volcanic districts, other minerals, seawater, some plants and fruits. Boric acid is synthesised by reacting borax (sodium tetraborate decahydrate) with a mineral acid, such as hydrochloric acid.

  • Molecular Formula: BH3O3
  • Molecular Weight 61.84
  • Soluble in water

Boric acid is widely used in chemical and biological sectors. Boric acid is used for weatherproofing wood and fireproofing fabrics; as a preservative; manufacturing of cements, crockery, porcelain, enamels, glass, borates, leather, carpets, hats, soaps, artificial gems; cosmetics; printing and dyeing, painting; photography; for impregnating wicks; electric condensers; hardening steel. It is furthermore used as an insecticide for cockroaches and black carpet beetles. In research labs, it is used as an astringent, antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal agent. It is added in buffers and for calibration of polyacrylamide gel columns for the separation of oligonucleotides by capillary electrophoresis.
