Propanesulfonate, is a zwitterionic detergent. CHAPS is generally synthesized from cholic acid and has a quaternary structure. The reagent can be used in a pH range of 2-12. The non-denaturing effect of CHAPS is highly advantageous. It finds application in the following techniques:

(a) It dissolves interactions between proteins

(b) It is used for membrane solubilization to yield various membrane proteins

(c) It is used in IEF as a non-denaturing detergent in concentrations of 2-4% to give good resolution bands for some sub-cellular proteins and some plant proteins.

(d) It is used in purification of proteins.
