Fetal Bovine Serum by MP Biomedicals is a high grade culture medium. Also known as FBS, or fetal calf serum, this is the blood fraction remaining after the natural coagulation of blood occurs, followed by centrifugation to remove any remaining red blood cells. This serum is obtained from the blood drawn from a bovine fetus via a closed system of collection. It has a very low level of antibodies and contains more growth factors, allowing for versatility in many different cell culture applications. Available as a golden brown colour liquid Quantity Provided: 100 ml per bottle pH: 6.7 to 7.8 Manufacturing Origin: Mexico Osmolality: 280 to 325 mOsm/kg Fetal bovine serum is most widely used as a serum-supplement for the in-vitro cell culture of eukaryotic cells. This serum contains the globular protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA), which is a major component of fetal bovine serum. These rich variety of proteins in fetal bovine serum maintains cultured cells in a medium in which they can survive, grow, and divide. In cell culture, this serum provides a wide variety of macromolecular proteins, low molecular weight nutrients, carrier proteins for water insoluble components, and other compounds necessary for in vitro growth of cells, such as hormones and attachment factors. It also adds buffering capacity to the medium and binds or neutralizes toxic components.
