Fluid Thioglycollate Medium w/ 0.05% SPS is supplied by TM Media. It is used to grow aerobic, anaerobic, and microaerophilic microorganisms. Fluid Thioglycollate Medium w/ 0.05% SPS is based on Brewer's formulation, and is designed to cultivate both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. It contains dextrose, casein enzymatic hydrolysate, yeast extract, and beef extract, which provide essential growth nutrients. L-cystine and sodium thioglycollate act as reducing agents and create conditions suitable for the growth of anaerobes and microaerophiles. Sodium thioglycollate also neutralizes the antibacterial effect of mercurial preservatives and other heavy metal compounds, which can be bacteriostatic in the materials being examined. The small quantity of agar helps stabilize the medium by maintaining a low redox potential.
