Hartley Digest Broth w/0.5% SPS is supplied by TM Media. Hartley identified the usefulness of HM hydrolysate in producing diphtheria toxin, which has since become a widely used general-purpose broth capable of supporting the growth of demanding (fastidious) microorganisms from the small inoculum. SPS serves as both an anticoagulant and an inhibitor of the bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects of blood cells and plasma factors. Hartley's Digest Broth can be employed for recovering fastidious microorganisms, such as Group A, C, G Streptococci, and Streptococcus pneumoniae, from the small inoculum. Douglas utilized the same medium to recover Corynebacterium diphtheriae, while Monckton used it as an enrichment medium for C. diphtheriae. Hartley's Digest Broth is suitable for cultivating blood samples, performing sterility testing, and producing diphtheria toxin, among other applications.
