Iodine (resublimed) is a high-grade reagent supplied by Micromaster. Few other chemical names used to denote this reagent include, diiodine, molecular iodine and iodine crystals. It is available in the form of a black or violet solid with a pungent odour. It has a melting point of around 113C and a boiling point of around 184C. Iodine is slightly soluble in water (0.3 g/l at 25C). It is stable if stored according to the recommended conditions. If exposed to excessive heat or in case of burning, it can generate hazardous decomposition products like hydrogen iodide. It is incompatible with a number of other substances like strong oxidizing agents, powdered metals, ammonia, alcohols and copper. It may cause irritation to eyes, skin and to the respiratory system (if inhaled).

About half of all produced iodine is used to produce various organoiodine compounds, 15% remains as the pure element, 15% is used to form potassium iodide and another 15% for other inorganic iodine compounds. The remaining 5% served minor uses. Iodine is majorly used as catalyst, animal feed supplement, stabiliser, dye, colourant and pigment, pharmaceutical, sanitation (from tincture of iodine), and photography. Some of the minor uses include smog inhibition, cloud seeding, and various uses in analytical chemistry.
