Lacmoid is also known as resorcein, iris blue, resorcin blue, resorcein blue, resorcinol blue or fluorescent blue. It has a melting point greater than 250 C and is sparingly soluble in water and ether. It is available as blackish violet colored powder and changes color from red (at4.4 pH) to blue (at 6.4 pH), hence is used as a pH indicator. It finds wide application in electrochromic devices, as photosensitive materials, parasiticides, hair dyes, cosmetics and ointment for hemorrhoids.
