Antibiotic Susceptibility Tests are conducted in microbiological laboratories to study the effect of an antibiotic on the growth of a microbe. The most common method to study antibiotic susceptibility includes the Kirby-Bauer Method. In this method, small discs saturated with antibiotic is placed on the plate containing the bacteria. A zone of inhibition of growth around the disc is observed to study the susceptibility of the microbe to the antibiotic. Linezolid-LZ-30mcg is a product by Micromaster. This drug is antibacterial in nature. It shows activity against gram-positive bacteria which are otherwise resistant to antibiotics. Some of the organisms against which Linezolid has activity include, Streptococcus, Vancomycin-resistant enterococci, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, etc. It is administered against skin infections, pneumoniae, drug-resistant tuberculosis, etc. It belongs to the oxazolidinone class of antibiotics. It is a protein synthesis inhibitor and is bactericidal in nature. It also has slight and reversible monoamine oxidase inhibition activity. The protein synthesis of bacteria is inhibited at the initiation step of the translation process. The elongation subunit is stopped from assembling. The drug binds to the 23S portion of 50S ribosomal subunit, thus effectively inhibiting the peptidyl transferase activity.
