Mercuric oxide yellow is synthesized by the precipitation of aqueous mercury with alkali. It is used as a source of mercury metal for optics and ceramic applications. They are insoluble in water and display ionic conductivity and are widely used in electronics and aerospace applications. It finds application in fuel cells and oxygen generation systems. It is also used in ointments for treating phthiriasis palpebrarum. It is very toxic to humans and can cause irritation to eyes, skin and respiratory tract.
