Morpholinoethane sulphonic acid (MES) is a high-grade reagent supplied by Research Lab Fine Chem Industries. Few other chemical names used to denote this reagent include, MES monohydrate, 2-Morpholinoethanesulfonic acid hydrate, 4-Morpholineethanesulfonic acid and 2-(4-morpholinyl)ethanesulfonic acid hydrate. It is available in the form of white crystalline powder, which is odourless. MES is soluble in water. It is stable as long it is stored as per the recommended storage conditions. Burning or prolonged exposure to heat or flammable sources can lead to the formation of hazardous decomposition products like carbon dioxide, sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides may form. It is incompatible with strong oxidising agents and dust. CAS No. 145224-94-8 Quantity provided: 25 gm/bottle Molecular formula: C6H13NO4S.H2O Molecular weight: 213.248 g/mol Assay: Minimum 99%MES monohydrate is a buffering agent which is widely used in biochemistry and molecular biology. It is a zwitterionic, morpholinic buffer that is useful for a pH range of 5.5 6.7. Common applications include in preparation of cell culture media, as a running buffer in electrophoresis and for protein purification in chromatography. MES lacks the ability to form a complex with most metal ions and is recommended for use as a non-coordinating buffer in solutions with metal ions. It is also used in buffered culture media for bacteria, yeast, and mammalian cells sometimes. It is toxic towards plants at high concentrations, but can be used in culture media at lower concentrations for plants. Due to low ionic mobility, MES is regarded as an excellent buffer for use in capillary electrochromatography. This reagent is often employed as a substitute for the highly toxic cacodylate, as well as a substitute for the non-zwitterionic buffers citrate and malate.
