The Bacteriological Analytical Manual includes MRVP Medium as part of its testing protocols for food and cosmetic samples, and APHA recommends the use of MRVP Medium for testing food and milk. Organisms that test positive for Methyl Red produce a significant amount of acid when fermenting dextrose, overpowering the phosphate buffering system and resulting in a red hue when methyl red pH indicator is added.
