N-methylphenazonium methosulphate is a high-grade reagent supplied by Research Lab Fine Chem Industries. Phenazine methosulphate (PMS) and 5-Methylphenazinium methyl sulphate are some of the other common chemical names used for this reagent. Phenazine methosulphate is available in the form of yellow crystals since the oxidized form is yellow in colour. The reduced form of this chemical is colourless. It is fairly soluble in water (100g/l at 20C). The melting point of Phenazine methosulphate is around 158-160C. This is a light sensitive reagent; hence it must be stored accordingly. Formation of dust and aerosols must be avoided. It is incompatible with strong oxidising agents. PMS forms hazardous decomposition products when exposed to fire or flammable materials. CAS No. 299-11-7 Quantity provided: 5 gm/bottle Molecular formula: C14H14N2O4S Molecular weight: 306.336 g/mol Assay: Minimum 90%N-methylphenazonium methosulphate is an electron acceptor and acts as a carrier in enzyme systems. The reduced form of PMS is easily oxidized by oxygen and hence it is used in assays as an electron carrier between enzymes and oxygen, cytochrome c, indophenols, or tetrazolium salts. It is also used as an electron donor to reduce cytochrome c or in photosynthetic experiments. PMS is reduced by flavoproteins such as succinic dehydrogenase. PMS is reduced non-enzymatically by NADH and NADPH. PMS is also reduced by dithionite, sodium borohydride, ascorbic acid, reduced ubiquinones, and reduced vitamin K. It is also used in the production of succinic dehydrogenase.
