Peptone Water is supplied by HiMedia. It is a sterile ready prepared media containing light yellow coloured solution in bottles. Peptone Water is generally used as an all-purpose growth medium and as a base of carbohydrate fermentation media. It is advisable to store this ready prepared media between 2-8C. Composition (in gm/L) is as follows:

Peptic digest of animal tissue (10.00)

Sodium chloride (5.00)

Peptone Water is particularly suitable as a substrate in the study of indole production. Peptic digest of animal tissue present in this media, is rich in tryptophan content. Presence of indole can be confirmed using either Kovacs or Ehlrich reagent. Peptone Water is also utilized as a base for carbohydrate fermentation studies with the addition of sugar and indicators such as bromocresol purple, phenol red or bromothymol blue. It is useful for cultivation of non-fastidious organisms. Peptone water is formulated as per Shread Donovan and Lee. Peptone Water with pH adjusted to 8.4 is suitable for the cultivation and enrichment of Vibrio species. Peptic digest of animal tissue provides essential nutrients. Sodium chloride is used to maintain the osmotic balance of the medium.
