Phenol red is a high-grade reagent supplied by Micromaster. Few other chemical names used to denote this reagent include, Phenolsulfonphthalein, Fenolipuna, Sulfonphthal and Sulphental. It is available in the form of a red odourless solid which is soluble in water. It is stable if stored according to the recommended conditions. If exposed to excessive heat or in case of burning, it can generate hazardous decomposition products like carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and sulphur oxides. Phenol red is incompatible with strong oxidising agents. Avoid dust formation. Also avoid exposing this product to light and excessive heat. It may cause eye or skin irritation and is harmful if ingested.

Phenol red is used as a pH indicator. Its exhibits a gradual colour transition from yellow to red over the pH range 6.8 to 8.2. If the pH is above 8.2, phenol red turns a bright pink (fuchsia) colour. This characteristic helps in monitoring of the pH changes in cell culture experiments as it will change from red to yellow when the pH value decreases. It has also been used in the PSP test for kidney functions. Recent studies conducted by medical researchers have shown that phenol red can serve as an estrogen mimic and is used in the process of in vitro fertilization. Phenol red is used as a dye even in automotive coolants.
