Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) is a type of medium that selectively cultivates fungi, and is mostly utilized for separating dermatophytes, yeasts, and other pathogenic as well as non-pathogenic fungi. Amino acids, nitrogen, carbon, vitamins, and minerals needed for the growth of organisms are provided by the pancreatic digest of casein and peptic digest of animal tissue. Dextrose serves as the source of energy, while agar solidifies the medium. The medium's high concentration of dextrose and acidic pH allows for the selective growth of fungi. Antibiotic chloramphenicol can be added to increase bacterial inhibition and improve dermatophyte recovery.
