Sodium molybdate by MP Biomedicals is a high grade reagent. This compound is a convenient source of molybdenum in various reactions. The reagent is available as a white powder which is soluble in water. When sodium molybdate reacts with sodium borohydride, molybdenum reduces to a lower valent oxide. It can be produced by dissolving MoO3 in sodium hydroxide at 5070 C and then crystallizing the filtered product. Heating to 100 C yields the anhydrous salt.

Sodium molybdate is widely used in chemical and biological sectors. It is widely used in fertilizers, and in particular, it has been advised for the treatment of whiptail in broccoli and cauliflower in molybdenum-deficient soils. Industrially, sodium molybdate may be used for corrosion inhibition, since it is a non-oxidizing anodic inhibitor. It is also used in industrial water treatment applications where galvanic corrosion is a likely to occur due to bimetallic construction.
